A two-page letter written in longhand cursive, blue pen, lined paper from Gloria. It seems that she contacted him by phone, and asked him to advise her on a writing career. According to Gloria, Cormier agreed to take a look at her award-winning poem and offer her counsel. The poem accompanies the letter and is two pages, typed with the title, “A Pawn on the Board”. There is a note at the end of the poem that indicates it was inspired by I Am the Cheese.
In his one-paged typed reply, Cormier applauded her capture of the paradoxical nature of the novel and went on to say that her use of simile and metaphor were effective. He encouraged her to “keep writing”.
